Today probably would’ve been a terrible day if it hadn’t ended well.
In the morning, I woke up and found out that my mom had fought with a raccoon over our food bag that we had not secured well enough, and had only managed to save 3 granola bars. I had slept through the whole thing. Also, we somehow picked the only campsite without a water pump, so we had to filter water from the river and treat it with iodine before we could drink it. If you’ve never had iodine treated water, I don’t recommend it. We only had 10 miles to walk, but it was hot, and we were a bad combination of tired and hungry. The only thing that kept us going was the thought of real beds and showers at the end of the day. We are staying with our friends Andy and Mary in Sheperdstown WV, and they were kind enough to meet us on the trail and walk us back to their house. It was further than we expected, but we eventually made it.
Oh man. It had been so long since I’d seen real plates, a real refrigerator, a real couch, a real piano, you name it. We’d almost forgotten what it was like to be in a real house. We also had our first real meal in a while, cooked straight from the kitchen. Tomorrow is our rest day, and I plan to spend the whole day indoors if I can.
